We’ve all heard it: “Three’s a crowd.”

Clearly, people saying this have never had a ménage à trois. Or maybe they have and it didn’t go well.

Anyway, for whatever reason you’re in search of an ultralight, best 3 person tent for backpacking, you came to the right place.

Each review is based on:

  • Durability
  • Ease of use
  • Season rating
  • Comfort Level
  • Detailed specs
  • Cheapest Prices

Let’s get started!

The Best 3 Person Tent for Backpacking:
What Sets an Ultralight Tent Apart?

1.When you’re backpacking, the best type of tent to use is an ultralight tent. The best 3 person tents for backpacking are compact. Also, they should be less than 5 lbs yet durable enough to last for years.

2. Usually, the lightest 3 person tents aren’t as stable as the heavier ones.

3. Condensation is common in ultralight tents. The key to preventing condensation is to make sure you have as much ventilation as possible. Leave your rainfly open at night, and you’ll find a lot less dampness in the morning.

Overview

The Big Agnes Fly Light Ultralight 3 is an excellent tent for backpacking. In addition to having an incredibly low trail weight, it provides excellent storage and organization options. It’s also easy to set up, and it accommodates people over 6 feet tall. The biggest downside is that the ultra thin walls don’t do well with mid- to heavy winds.

Price-O-Meter: $$$$
(Price scale is 1-5, with 5 being the most expensive)

Included Set Up

It all depends on the vendor. If you buy directly from REI, only the stuff sacks and 11 superlight stakes are included.

However, you can usually get better deals if you look around the web for them. In this case, everything but the footprint comes with the tent. Talk about a bargain!

You can either buy the exact footprint for the Fly Light Ultralight Best 3 Person Tent, or you can save money by using a footprint you already have. Another option is to poke around the web for a cheaper rainfly that’s just as good. Just make sure it’s compatible with the tent’s dimensions.

Why We Love It

Easy organization: There’s plenty of storage space both outside and inside this 3 person ultralight tent. In the first place, the vestibule allows for covered storage space. The second awesome characteristic is that the tent has 7 interior pockets.

Stability: Due to its expert design and several guy points, it the Big Agnes Fly Light Ultralight 3 person tent can handle mild rain and winds. However, it *is* one of the lightest ultralight tents and therefore has ultra-thin wall. Naturally, heavy winds will take a toll on the shape.

Comfort: Next, there’s the comfort factor. Unsurprisingly, this ultralight beauty is comfy due to plenty of room. Since the peak height is 42 inches (3.5 feet), most people can comfortably sit upright.

Another aspect is its length. Attention, tall campers! The sleeping length is 90″ (7.5 feet). With this length, there’s extra room at the end to store some of your belongings.

However, the walls lean inward which can make it a little crowded for 3 people. It’s best as a 2 person tent for backpacking.

Ease of Use: In the same way it’s comfy, the Fly Light Ultralight best 3 person tent is relatively easy to set up. It’s no instant tent, of course. But considering that it’s a backpacking tent, it isn’t hard to set up. DAC Twist Clips snap onto the poles quick as can be.

Reflective guyouts and webbings on the corners help keep you from stumbling into the tent after one beer too many…

Special Considerations

Although this is one of the best 3 person tents for backpacking, it isn’t good for rough weather or car camping. It’s very, very thin. That compromises durability and the ability to withstand heavy wind and rain. Steer clear of the Fly Creek if you know you’ll be in very windy or stormy conditions on a regular basis.

Best Uses

Above all, the Fly Light Ultralight best 3 person tent is ideal for backpacking. We can’t emphasize enough how lightweight it is. In fact, it’s lighter than a lot of 1 and 2 person tents. So for long treks, this could be a life saver.

Reviews of the Best 3 Person Tents:
Big Agnes Copper Spur Ultralight 3 Person Tent

The Most User-Friendly Ultralight 3 Person Tent

Weight Measurements Basics Materials
Packed Weight: 4 lbs Floor Dimensions:  90 x 70/62  inches Form Factor: Freestanding Canopy Fabric: Ripstop nylon/polyester mesh
Minimum Trail Weight: 3 lbs 7 oz Peak Height: 43″ Doors: 2 Tent Floor: polyurethane-coated ripstop nylon

Number of stakes: 8 Vestibule Square Footage: 9 + 9 square feet Available Color: Orange/Grey Pole Material: DAC Featherlite aluminum

Overview

The next ultralight, best 3 person tent up for review is another Big Agnes tent, and it’s just as impressive as the Fly Creek. The Big Agnes Brand is one of the best tent brands; you can count on quality tents and great customer service.

In a nut shell, the Big Agnes Copper Spur 3P has plenty of advantages over the Fly Creek. It’s more spacious, has more features, and is much sturdier. However, it is heavier and takes up more space in a backpack.

Price-O-Meter: $$$$

Included Set Up

When you buy this particular Big Agnes Copper Spur Ultralight 3 person tent, set up includes the poles, stuff sack with sewn-in instructions, 8 stakes, and lightweight tent clips.

This is by far the most comfortable ultralight 3 person tent. (Click for more pictures.)

Why We Love It

Doors & Vestibules: There are two doors with vestibules. This adds extra storage with twice the vestibule space.

Organization: There are an incredible 8 interior mesh pockets on the inside of the tent. This means that each person has two pockets to organize/separate their personal belongings.

Stability: Unlike the Big Agnes Fly Light Ultralight 3 person tent, the Copper Spur is sturdy for its weight. This is a huge contributor to why it’s heavier, of course. But it stands up much better under windy and rainy conditions.

Comfort:

Two vestibules mean twice the storage. Since they have room, you’ll have less gear crammed in the tent with you.

Also, rather than having one door to crawl in and out of, there are two! That means more personal space, ultimately. The chances of waiting for a tent-mate to get in and out are slim to none.

The longer your backpacking trip is, the more thankful you’ll be for dual exits/entrances! You’re already shacking up with two other people *and* spending most of your time during the day with them. Even of you love ’em, you know… it’s annoying to crawl over people every time you have to get up.

Tall campers will be a little more comfortable in the Copper Spur Ultralight 3 person tent, due to the higher arched walls.

Special Considerations

At 4 lbs, this isn’t on the lightest side for being an ultralight tent.

Also, one common complaint is condensation build-up. It tends to collect on the walls and dribble down the tent walls. Condensation is normal in ultralight tents, so that isn’t a deal breaker.

The key to preventing condensation is to make sure you have as much ventilation as possible. Leave your rainfly open at night, and you’ll find a lot less dampness in the morning.

Even though the tent comes with 8 stakes, we recommend buying more. The more you have, the better you can secure it in dicey weather conditions.

The two vestibules are fantastic. Even so, they aren’t very big – just something to keep in mind when packing.

Best Uses

First and foremost, the Big Agnes Copper Spur Ultralight best 3 person tent is meant for backpacking. However, it’s better at weathering storms than the Fly Light. So if you backpack often but only car camp a handful of times a year, this one tent is probably fine. (For the price, you’ll be motivated to make that work!)

Nemo Dagger Ultralight 3 Person Tent

The Most Spacious & Sturdy Tent for Backpacking

Weight Measurements Basics Materials
Packed Weight: 4 lbs 4 oz Floor Dimensions:  90 x 70 inches Form Factor: Freestanding Canopy Fabric: 20-denier nylon/mesh
Minimum Trail Weight: 3 lbs 12 oz Peak Height: 42 inches Doors: 2 Tent Floor: 30-denier nylon
Packed Size: 19 x 6 inches Square Footage:  43 square feet Season Rating: 3 Rainfly: 20-denier nylon
Pole Diameter: 9/9.6 millimeters Vestibule Square Footage: 23 square feet Available Color: Birch Leaf Green Pole Material: Aluminum

Overview

Price-O-Meter: $$$

Included Set Up

What’s included with this lovely ultralight, best 3 person tent? The aluminum pole and tent stakes come with the tent. Purchase the Nemo Dagger 3P Footprint and Nemo Dagger 3P Gear Loft separately.

Why We Love It

Ease of Use: Set up is easy and should take you less than 10-15 minutes. On average, it does take just a little longer to snap the clips on and off the poles. There’s just something different about these clips.

Similarly to the Big Agnes Copper Spur Ultralight best 3 person tent, the Nemo Dagger 3 has two doors. What a relief! This will cut down on awkwardly crawling over your tent mates to get out of the tent.

The Nemo Dagger UL 3P is spacious, both inside and out. (Click for more pictures and reviews)

Stability: It’s always a little tricky to find stability in an ultralight tent. On the one hand, it needs to be very thin in order to be super light. But on the other hand, you want to know it can stand up under wind, rain, and even snow.

The Nemo Dagger Ultralight best 3 person tent is a win-win. It isn’t the lightest ultralight tent. But the few extra ounces are worth it. Especially when you take into account that you can split it up between three backpacks.

Comfort:

As discussed in the Copper Spur review, two doors with vestibules nearly doubles the comfort level. There’s twice the exterior space, as well as more wiggle room inside.

Compared to the Big Agnes ultralight tents in this review, the Nemo Dagger Ultralight 3 person tent is probably the easiest to sit up in, all around. Comparatively, the peak height, square footage, and vestibule areas are all larger.

Congrats! You and your two backpacking tent pals will still like each other at the end of your trip, since you won’t feel like you’re stacked on top of each other. (Unless that’s what you wanted all along… knock yourself out! This is the best 3 person tent for it. )

Organization: First, there’s an overhead sleeve for a light of some kind. There are also a couple of mesh pockets for storing your electronics, a book or two, and other personal things like that.

Special Considerations

Unlike the Big Agnes tents, the Nemo Dagger Ultralight 3 person tent does not have reflective parts. So, if you’re camping in a crowded area, make sure to put up some light around your tent when you go to sleep.

Especially if you’re camping out at a music fest of some sort. It’s *highly* likely that a drunken camper will mistake your tent for their own… it happens more often than you think

Another aspect to be aware of is that there are less interior pockets. Once you see the 7  pockets in the Big Agnes Fly Creek Ultralight best 3 person tent, it’s hard to settle for any less. However, all the extra interior and vestibule space make up for that.

Check out the Nemo Dagger UL 3P Gear Loft, which adds even more room for stashing your gear.

Best Uses

As is the case for all ultralight tents, the Nemo Dagger Ultralight best 3 person tent is designed for backpacking. In contrast to many ultralight tents, though, it’s heavy and sturdy enough to use for car camping as well.

Finding the Best 3 Person Tent for You

Each of these ultralight 3 person tents is high quality and great for backpacking.

Of course, the best 3 person tent for *you* depends on your needs. It’s pretty easy to make a choice when you know what your primary purpose of the tent will be. Combine purpose with your priorities and there’s your answer.

For example, if you value space over weight, the Nemo Dagger Ultralight 3 person tent is best for you. But if you know you’ll be going on backpacking treks that last for weeks, you’ll probably want the Big Agnes Fly Creek. Then there’s the Copper Spur, which is kind of the best of both worlds.

Although they’re pricey, consider your new ultralight 3 person tent an investment – it’ll make backpacking that much better.

Happy Trails!

Best Tent Brands: Intro

Best Tent BrandClearly, some manufacturers of tents are more trustworthy than others. This is why we’ve compiled the complete list of the all-time best tent brands.

Kudos to this couple for having a good time, but seriously. The tent kind of sucks. At least if it were intended to serve any sort of purpose other than stage a photo.

But look no further – here are reviews of the 6 best tend brands.

Best Tent Brands #1: Coleman

Of course. Was there any doubt?

While Coleman doesn’t cater to rough and tough outdoors people, it does cater to the other 95% of the population. Their tents, coolers, and other products are made for household use and camping trips a few times a year.

For must of us, that’s all we need. And if you’re on a budget, you’ll love Coleman’s prices. Somehow Coleman manages to balance perfectly on that thin line between good value and “cheap,” meaning their prices are as low as possible while still performing well for the money.

Our Favorite Coleman Tents:

First, take a glance at the Coleman 8 Person Instant Tent. It’s everything we’ve come to expect from Coleman: great functionality, excellent value for the money, and simple.

But Colemans aren’t always wallflowers.

The Coleman Tenaya Lake Fast Pitch 8 Person Tent

The Coleman Tenaya Lake 8 Person Lighted Fast Pitch Tent with Closet, Multicolor, for example, really blows up that “plain Jane” image. With an LED lighting system, built-in closet, and a wheeled carry bag, this super high tech instant tent is quite impressive.

Coleman is the Best Tent Brand for:

  • Car Camping
  • Occasional Use (during the summer season, mostly)
  • Campers on a Budget

Best Tent Brands #2: Big Agnes

Big Agnes, the “Mother of Comfort,” specializes in camping equipment, gear, and clothing. Whether you choose an ultralight tent or an ultra-comfy sleeping pad, the Big Agnes gear will be both comfortable and durable.

Our Favorite Big Agnes Tent:

This isn’t the first time you’ve heard us bring up the Big Agnes brand name. If you’re a dedicated backpacker, you know the importance of having the best ultralight tent. And the is just that.

2 Person Instant Tent, Pop Up Tents, Fast Pitch Tent
The Big Agnes Fly Creak Ultralight 2 Person Pop Up Tent

The Big Agnes Fly Creek Ultralight Tent does a good job of highlighting the brand’s excellence. Big Agnes definitely knows their specialty, as this 2.6 lb best 2 person ultralight tent has everything a backpacker could ask for.

Bottom Line:

Whether it’s camping gear, clothing, or a tent you’re after, Big Agnes’ products have withstood the test of time and will give you the most bang for your buck.

Best Tent Brands #3: ALPS Mountaineering

ALPS Mountaineering is another brand of tent that we mention quite often. As long as ALPS Mountaineering has been in business, the company has followed this mission: “To create durable, high-performance performance products without the premium price tag.”

Since their beginning in 1993, ALPS Mountaineering has continuously widened their product range. From the Lynx 1 Lightweight Tent to foam camping mats, there are hundreds of high quality camping products.

Our Favorite ALPS Mountaineering Tent:

It was difficult to choose just one favorite, but we finally settled on the ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 1. This is a great lightweight tent for one person. It’s less than 4 lbs and is defiant in the face of inclement weather.

Bottom Line:

If you don’t want to spend a fortune on a quality tent, consider an ALPS Mountaineering tent. This brand tends to be a bit more expensive than Coleman, but there’s also an increase in quality.

ALPS Mountaineering is the Best Brand for:

  • Car Campers
  • Frequent Campers

Best Tent Brands #4: Kelty

Haven’t heard of the brand Kelty? You’re not alone.

But if you’re searching for the best tent brands, make sure to look at Kelty tents. Kelty’s mission is truly inspiring:

When it comes to our brand, we want you to know that we stand for excitement. For adventure. For products that live up and stand up…because your good times depend on it.

Our goal is to deliver up proven gear that’s innovative, uncomplicated and built to last. We’re there for those of you seeking good times, adventure and gear that brings it all together. We hope to empower and inspire you to get outside… create memories and fulfill the passion for adventure that we all have.

Our Favorite Kelty Tent:

While Kelty offers some dope tents, the Kelty Salida 2 is our favorite. It weighs less than 5 lbs, which is pretty damn good for a two person tent. Equally as cool is its idiot-proof color coded clips.

In fact, the Kelty Salida 2 earned itself the winning spot in How to Choose the Best 2 Person Ultralight Tent.

Bottom Line:

In short, Kelty is one of the best tent brands because of its strong, adventure-friendly nature. The relative durability and reasonable prices of Kelty’s tents made this a must for our review of the best tent brands.

Kelty is Best for:

  • Frequent Adventurers
  • The Mid-Frequency Camper (Between ‘occasional’ and ‘every weekend’)

Best Tent Brands #5: Wenzel

Like Kelty, Wenzel is another lesser known brand. Even though you might not be familiar with the Wenzel name, you can trust it. They’ve been producing tents and gear for 120 years!

Wenzel has an enticing mission statement. In summary, the company’s goal is to provide the best family tents. The tents are easy to set up, and they’re tough enough to keep your family dry and comfortable.

Our Favorite Wenzel Tent:

We’re partial to the Wenzel 8 Person Klondike Tent. There’s room for (up to) 8 people, and there are two rooms. The cool part about this large family tent is that the second room is like a screened-in porch.

When you need a break from the sun or it’s rainy, the screened-in room is so much fun. Remember to pack cards for the  best drinking games!

Bottom Line:

Wenzel is a brand that commands respect, since it’s been growing for 120 years. Since they’re know for providing strong, waterproof family tents, always consider a Wenzel tent.

Wenzel is Best for:

  • Families
  • Frequent Car Camping

Best Tent Brands #6: Eureka

I can personally vouch for Eureka brand tents. Growing up, my family of 8 used a Eureka tent for summer car camping. It lasted for over 15 years! Then my parents sold it.

Like the other best tent brands in this review, Eureka makes more than just tents. They sell lots of camping gear, like sleeping pads and sleeping bags.

Our Favorite Eureka Tent:

The Eureka Copper Canyon 4 Person Tent is a spacious cabin tent. And because of the large D-shaped door and fabulous circulation, this is a super comfortable tent.

It’s just like the one I grew up with, only it’s upgraded a little. It’ll serve you well, my friends. Have fun picking out a new Eureka tent!

Bottom Line:

Eureka’s Copper Canyon 4 Person Tent is a prime example of Eureka’s high quality products. In comparison with Coleman tents, these are a bit pricier. But the quality is also a little better.

There’s about a 99% chance you’ll find the size and shape tent you want when looking Eureka brand tents.

Eureka is Best for:

  • Casual Camping
  • Newbies
  • Families

Reviews of the Best Instant Tents: Intro

So, you need a tent. And pop up tents are pretty sweet. We just don’t want to see you end up like like the guys in the video (it will be above, or picture). We promise you’re in for some expert reviews, but first… an anecdote.

Pop up tents are like that one neighbor you dated. At first it’s all about convenience! No worries about commuting, running back and forth to grab a change of clothes, or anything like that. Your new beau is literally a minute away.

But when you break up and you’re stuck living next to each other… FAIL.

Our goal is to provide complete reviews of the best instant tents to avoid those kinds of mishaps.

Reviews of the Best Instant Tents: Pros & Cons

Like all of the best things, even the best instant tents have their malfunctions that end up making them the OPPOSITE of convenient. Here’s quick summary:

Pros: Cons:
Quick, easy set up Not as durable
More spacious Heavy
Great for festivals/family camping Not many 1 man pop up tents
Not suited for rain

Unless you’re planning on going to the backcountry or camping every weekend, instant tents are plenty durable. They can also weather gentle rain. (But make sure to use a rainfly and footprint!)

Reviews of the Best Instant Tents: Pop Up & Instant

An “instant” tent sounds great. It’s like instant hot chocolate; just add hot water! But the name is a little misleading. In actuality, different types of instant tents need different amounts of prep work.

If you want an instant tent for dummies, make sure it’s a best instant pop up tent. Pop up tents are the whole package, as the poles are built-in to the tent itself. These require the least amount of work – pull it out of the bag, and wallah! All you have to do after that is put pegs through loops on each corner of the tent.

If there’s any chance of rain, throw a rainfly over the tent. This will also hold the tent in place.

Some of the best instant tents require a little more work; you’ll need to attach the poles through the tent itself.

Reviews of the Best Instant Tents: How to Set Up Your Tent Like a Pro

Every type of tent is its own beast. But whether it’s instant, bivy, ultralight, or a lightweight tent, these tips apply:

  1. Set your tent up on the highest ground in the area to prevent waking up in a pool of water like ____.
  2. Make sure the tent spot doesn’t have stray tree branches, stray pieces of coal, etc….you’ll sleep a lot better.
  3. Lay a footprint on the spot you’ll be putting your tent.
  4. Make sure the rainfly’s tightly stretched out and away from the tent. (This helps prevent too much wet condensation.)

Here’s a great video showing how to set up and fold a pop up tent:

Reviews of the Best Instant Tents: the Top Rated 2 Person 3 Season Instant Tent

Peak Height:  45″ (114.3 cm)
Dimensions:  93″ x 56″ x 45″ (L x W x H)
Sq Footage 36′
Warranty: Lifetime
Doors:  2 doors with vestibules
Warranty: Lifetime

We picked the Mountainsmith Morrison EVO 2 Tent for a few reasons. First, the lifetime warranty won us over. A company that stands behind a product like this shows confidence in their tents’ durability.

Second, we like the included features. The detachable ceiling loft pocket, multiple doors with vestibules, and no-see-um wall mesh panels are exactly the kinds of qualities we require to deem something one of the best instant tents.

This is truly an instant tent – not a pop up. While not as easy as a pop up, the poles are snap-on, so you don’t have to thread them through loops.

Tips:

  • There’s enough room for two people – it’s meant to be set up with more than one person. If you think you’ll be using it by yourself, practice setting it up before using it on a solo camping trip.
  • Like most instant tents, the Mountainsmith Morrison EVO 2 isn’t equipped for frequent usage. Prolonged exposure to the sun will cause sun damage. (The warranty doesn’t cover damage caused by ultraviolet rays.)
  • This makes a good car camping tent as well as a suitable backpacking tent. It definitely isn’t an ultralight tent, but it’s doable if it’s a short trip. (Then you won’t need to pack as many provisions, extra gear, and clothes.)

Reviews of the Best Instant Tents: The Best 4 Man Pop Up Tent for Camping

Peak Height:  47″  (almost 4 feet)
Floor Dimensions:  80.7″ x 78.7″
Doors: 2 (D-shaped)
Windows: 4
Packed Weight:  8 lbs
Shape: Dome
Colors: Camel, Army Green

To showcase the awesomeness of four person instant tents, we’ve chosen the FiveJoy 4 Person Instant Tent.

Storage pockets and hang loops make it easy to organize 2-4 people’s keys (and other small belongings) within the tent. For anyone who’s ever tried to maneuver around a dark tent, it’s an especially big relief to know there’s a handy spot for hanging a lantern.

We really like this as a spring/summer tent. The mesh windows on all four sides promote free ventilation, so expect no stuffy air inside of this best instant tent.

One especially neat factor is that each window can double as a rainfly. To do this, attach guylines to the loops under the window flaps and attach them to tent pegs. The pegs and guylines are included.

Tips:

  • It’s great that the windows double as rainflies. Even so, the vendor makes it very clear that their amazing instant tents are NOT intended for use in heavy rain or for extreme backpacking.
  • Make a FiveJoy 4 Person Best Instant Tent your hot-weather tent. The ventilation fits hot weather like a glove!

The Coleman 7-8 Person Large Instant Tent large, spacious tent comes with a removable room divider. Opt for an open vibe with a group of friends or divide it into two rooms. For families, it works really well for parents to sleep in one room and kids to sleep in the other.

The poles are already assembled – this is a true pop up tent. So when you pull into your campsite after a long drive, tent set-up won’t be a hassle. This is such a relief after a long, hot car ride!

Ventilation plays a huge role in the usability of a tent. Notably, the multiple windows and vented floor help keep the air flowing. Reflective guylines provide added safety.

It’s important to keep in mind that this is a basic tent. There aren’t any added features like storage compartments, but simplicity is kind of Coleman’s thing.

Tips:

While this is the best instant tent for most situations, here are some things to consider before buying:

  • The poles can get be difficult to extend. (Bring along spray lubricant just in case.)
  • The footprint and rainfly must be purchased seperately.
  • At about 40lbs, it’s a hefty guy. This makes it best instant tent for car camping. Choose a lightweight or ultralight tent for backpacking.
  • Since it’s made for large groups, this is a luxurious tent for 2 people. Two queen size air mattresses fit inside, and you’ll still have wiggle room.
  • Wanna glamp in style? There’s plenty of room to deck this portable cabin out, if fewer than four are sharing it.
  • Although the Coleman Instant Tent holds up well for campers who use it just a handful of times a year, it isn’t tough enough to keep up with avid campers.

Reviews of the Best Instant Tents: The CORE 12 Person Instant Tent Cabin

Another huge instant tent is the CORE 12 Person Instant Tent.

Peak Height: 80″ (6.66′)
Dimensions:  17′ x 10′
Colors:  Green/Grey
Shape: Cabin

Another huge instant tent is the CORE 12 Person Instant Tent. This collection of best quick tent reviews wouldn’t be complete without including the ultra huge CORE 12 Person Instant Tent. This ___ instant tent takes it up a notch, making the Coleman pale a little in comparison.

Notable features include three room dividers, wall storage pockets, an electrical cord access port, and a gear lofts.

Another legup the CORE has over the Coleman Original Instant Tent is that it’s the whole package. The fact that the tent comes complete with a rainfly and a gear loft really maximizes those features.

Don’t be afraid of a little wind or rain! Perhaps the most convincing argument for buying a CORE Instant Tent is how well it’ll hold up in the face of light wind and rain. (Compared to other instant tents.)

Tips:

  • Make the most out of this best instant tent. For example, use the three dividers to create a “hangout room” for when it’s rainy. Then put up the other dividers for either two sleeping rooms or another type of room. Get creative with it!
  • Don’t count on squeezing 12 adults in this best instant tent, unless you don’t mind surrendering your personal space. Think about how chummy you and your camping buddies will want to be at night.

CORE instant tents of the same style are also available in 6- and 9- person sizes.

7 Best One Man Tents, Reviewed

Best Ultralight 2 Person Tent

Why These 4 Make the Best Ultralight 2 Person Tent

Finding the Best Ultralight 2 Person Tent for You: Overview

Have you ever heard the expression, “Couples who camp together stay together”? It’s a nice saying, but it could use a second part: …if they have the best ultralight 2 person tent

Due to their unbelievably low trail weight, ultralight tents are becoming more and more popular for backpackers. Generally, to be “ultralight,” a one person tent should be around 2 pounds and a two person tent should be below 3 pounds.

Also, the best ultralight tents for backpacking should be compact. And, even though they’re light, comparatively durable.

If you’ve ever shared a tiny, poorly ventilated tent with someone, you know how uncomfortable it can be. But that’s not going to happen again! I’ve reviewed four ultralight tents on everything from pole material to comfort level.

Best Ultralight 2 Person Tent:
The Best Tent for the Appalachian Trail

MSR Flylight Tent

Trail Weight: 2lb 4oz
Seasons: 3
Dimensions:
82 in (L) x 55 in max (W) x 44 in (H)
Square Footage: 29 sq ft floor
Capacity: 2

Construction:

Notably, this best ultralight 2 person tent has a wide front door. You’ll also have plenty of interior room, so you and your partner can both fit in sleeping pads, shoes, and other personal belongings.

Another perk is that you won’t have to play the bump-into-everything game when you crawl inside. As a result, this is a great tent for long trips… you and your sleeping mate will probably get along better with your own personal space!

Other Notable Features:

  • 10D Nylon Ripstop Fabric Rain Fly (1,000 mm coating)
  • 20D Nylon Ripstop Fabric (1,200 mm coating)
  • Reinforced Corners with Peak Patches
  • Dual Mesh Windows
  • Built-In, Adjustable Stake Loops
  • Peak Height of 3.67 Feet

Pros:

If you’ve poked around our blog for other tent posts, you’ve probably noticed that MSR brand tents just keep popping up. (Pun intended!) But that’s because they’re so great!

MSR stands for Mountain Safety Research, which is a corporation based in Seattle. MSR combines their love of the outdoors with precise engineering, with the belief that the better the gear the better the experience.

This lightweight beauty has the best volume-to-weight ratio of all MSR’s tents. And when you arrive at your campsite at the end of a long day, it’s easy to set up with just two standard trekking poles.

Cons:

If you’re on a budget, this might be out of your price range. Luckily, there are plenty of best ultralight tents under $200 in this review. (If you hunt around for deals. We’ll help you.)

However, it really is worth the investment if you can make the cost work.

Best Ultralight 2 Person Tent:
The Best All Purpose Ultralight 2 Person Tent

Luxe Tempo Ultralight 2 Person Tent

Trail Weight: 3.9 lbs
Seasons: 3-4
Dimensions:
4.6 * 6.9 ft, peak height 3.6 ft
Vestibule Square Footage:
Each vestibule is 6.8 square feet.

Capacity:

The Luxe Tempo Ultralight sleeps 2 people, and comfortably so. With a roomy vestibule and generous square footage, it isn’t one of those elbow-to-elbow deals that makes you feel ripped off, like you really just got a large 1 person tent.

Construction:

The tent fabric is silnylon, which is partly why the tent is a steal of a deal. Expect to stay dry, since the fly is made from hearty ripstop polyester taffeta.

The two fabric poles are aluminum, as is common in most quality poles. However, this is another reason this tent is budget-friendly. Aluminum is the “second best” pole material, beat only by the rough and tough carbon fiber. (Refer to our Ultimate Tent Buying Guide for more definitions of tent material. It gets confusing!

In addition to the protective silnylon and aluminum poles, this best ultralight backpacking tent feature:

  • Two guy lines
  • Not one, but two doors (Score!)
  • Reinforced tent panels at each corner
  • Reflective loops
  • Ripstop, taped nylon floor
  • Large vestibules at each door
  • No-See-Um Mesh Panels

Pros:

First of all, the reflective loops are so helpful. When you’re looking for your tent at night… they help you find it, which is super handy when you’ve had a few brewskis.

The overall value of the Luxe Tempo 2 is just amazing. It’s roomy, made from quality materials, and affordable. You and your partner will love the extra storage space and the money saved.

Cons:

The Luxe Tempo 2, like every tent, has flaws – but only a couple. I don’t like the lack of extras inside the tent, like hooks for hanging stuff or storage pockets.

The only other thing I don’t like is that the tent footprint isn’t included with the tent when you order it from most retailers. However, there’s a hack for this. If you order your tent through Amazon, the footprint is included.

Best Ultralight 2 Person Tent:
The Best 1 Person Ultralight Tent for Staying Dry

Big Agnes Fly Creek UL 1

Trail Weight: 1lb 11oz
Seasons: 3
Dimensions:
86 in (L) x 38 in (W) x 38 in (H)
Square Footage: 20 sq foot floor
Sleeps:
1 person (A Big Agnes Fly Greek UL 2 is available for 2 people.)

Construction:

Okay, we’re cheating a little. But the 1 person is just so darn comfy. And as they say, talk about what you know, right?

Above all, this svelte ultralight tent for backpacking is popular for its ability to keep campers dry, even during storms. It’s an all-around user friendly tent, largely because it’s so easy to set up.

Other convenient features include pockets for headphones, 3 interior mesh pockets, and gear loops that work with the Big Agnes Entertainment Center.

Pros:

Okay, I misled you with the title… since this is a 1 person tent. But it’s just so darn comfy. And as they say, talk about what you know, right?

This svelte ultralight tent for backpacking is popular for its ability to keep campers dry, even during storms. Also, it’s an all-around user friendly tent, largely because it’s so easy to set up.

Cons:

First, some people have beef with the Big Agnes is that it may not always hold its shape well during storms. This is to be expected though. Naturally, the lighter the tent is, the more difficult it is to be durable.

Second, the Big Agnes feels cramped inside to many people. Although that all depends on body types – I’m 5′ 6″ and weigh about 115 lbs. I find this best ultralight 1 person tent fine in terms of interior space.

Obviously someone who’s 6′ 4″ and super ripped isn’t going to have the same experience!

Second, if you don’t want to break the $200 mark, this is a little out of that budget range. But really, it’s worth it.

Best Ultralight 2 Person Tent:
The Best Ultralight 3 Season Tent for the Money

Kelty Salida 2

Trail Weight: 3lbs 14oz
Seasons: 3
Dimensions:
88 in (L) x 55/55 in (W) x 43 in maximum (H)
Square Footage: 30.5 sq ft

Capacity:

The Kelty sleeps 2 people. It’s important to keep in mind that it’s a tough fit for people over six feet. Even so, two people with smaller builds will sleep comfortably.

Construction:

First and foremost, the Kelty Salida 2 is a semi-freestanding tent with aluminum poles that fold up for compact backpacking storage. It comes with color coded clips for easy set up (can everything in life please come with color coded cheat guides?), a roll top cube carry bag, and giant a Kelty hug clip.

Additionally, it’s decked out with an easy entry D-shaped door, inner pockets for organizing your stuff, and a fully taped seam construction. Because of the compact poles, robust Kelty hug clip, and easy set up, this may be the best ultralight 2 person tent for backpacking.

Pros:

Of course the color coded clips are sweet; I can’t help but mention that almost every time a tent has these. Overall, this best ultralight 2 person tent is a fantastic, all purpose tent.

You’d be hard pressed to find a camper who’s disappointed with their Kelty. Kelty tents are consistent and reliable. Is the Kelty Ultralight 2 Person Tent the best tent for the Appalachian trail? Probably not. It’s difficult to compete with the best 2 person ultralight tent like the Big Agnes 2.

But it is one of the best tents for your wallet, and for your backpacking experience.

Cons:

In reality, this isn’t the best tent for stormy conditions. Expect some condensation after a night of rain.

Even though the Kelty Salida isn’t winning any weather awards, it’s still pretty good at shielding you from the elements. And for the price, what’s a little dampness?

Additionally, there’s only one door. That’s okay, but you know. Once you have a tent with two doors, it’s kind of hard to go back.

Another heads up is that Kelty doesn’t provide all the necessary lines and pegs. But get at least 3 extra lines and pegs, and you’ll be all set when your new ultralight tent arrives at your doorstep.

Best Backpacking Hammocks for the Money

Best Backpacking Hammock Reviews 2017

Best Backpacking Hammock Reviews:
Welcome to your next favorite camping style!

Maybe you’re here because you’re thinking of turning over from the other side. The “other side,” of course, refers to tents. If it’s not on your radar yet, hopefully these best backpacking hammock reviews will at least show you how awesome it can be.

Setting aside your tent for a backpacking hammock could be your next best (or at least memorable) adventure. True, it feels a little different at first. But you’ll get the “hang” of it in no time, and it’s a fun way to keep your adventures challenging.

This review showcases the finest backpacking hammocks to help you plan for the wonderful world of hammock backpacking. Get ready for the goods!

Best Backpacking Hammock Reviews:
4 Reasons to try Hammock Backpacking

First, backpacking hammocks are more comfortable. Unsurprisingly, many people find them much easier on the back.

A second, and perhaps overlooked benefit, is the effective shield from the elements. Since hammocks hang well above the ground, there’s no waking up in a pool of water inside of your “leak proof” tent.

Another advantage is better ease of use. The ideal backpacking hammock is compact and light when packed up. But probably the biggest headache-saver of all is the dreaded tent setup.

After a long day of trekking through challenging terrain, sometimes all you want is a quick and easy set up so you can rest. Setting up backpacking hammocks is usually a fast, simple process.

Overview

The Hennessy Hammock Ultralite Backpacker Asym Zip Hammock is quite possible the hottest ultralight backpacking hammock on the market. Everybody who’s anybody is talking about it!

As it says in the name, this Hennessy work of art is asymmetrical. Because of it’s shape, it just may be the best backpacking hammock to set up at the end of a long day. You should always look for asymmetry, since this shape is easier to hang and much more comfortable.

Weighing in at just two pounds, it’s light as a feather and oh-so-comfortable.

Light doesn’t equal weak, though. Heavy duty zippers and the tough nylon taffeta of this backpack hammock will withstand miles and miles.

One excellent test of using this ultralight backpacking hammock over almost 440 miles yielded excellent results. This mighty Hennessy Hammock was still going strong.

Special Considerations

With a weight limit of 200 pounds and a maximum height threshold of 6 feet, this hammock won’t work for certain builds and body types. Fortunately, we got your back. There are plenty more backpacking hammocks to accommodate taller and heavier adventurers.

It’s also important to know that stakes for the rain fly are not included.

Bonus Features

Hennessy offers customization. You can actually mix and match parts to create your dream hammock, for an additional fee. Who said dreams don’t come true?

Best Uses

This is best for long hikes, since it’s so light and compact. So, get ready to wade through streams, scale mountains, and dodge unstable rocks without a heavy backpack hammock dragging you down.

Best Backpacking Hammock Reviews:
Best Value

Serac Classic Portable Hammock for Backpacking

TYPE: Hammock & Strap Bundle
PACKED SIZE: 7 x 6 inches
BOTTOM DIMENSIONS: 12 x 53 x 108 inches
WEIGHT: 14 ounces
HAMMOCK FABRIC: 210T Parachute Nylon
HAMMOCK SET-UP: attached stuff sack, two tree straps, two steel carabiners
CAN SUPPORT: 400+ pounds

TREE STRAP MATERIALS: non-stretch polyester
TREE STRAP DIMENSIONS:
6 feet x 1 inch

WALLET-O-METER: $
RELAX-O-METER: 4

Overview:

These reviews of the best backpacking hammock wouldn’t be complete without a Serac hammock. This classic hammock is extremely light and simple to set up and put away.

So when you arrive, weary, at the end of your hike – 1,2,3 and your luxurious bed awaits you! As you sleepily pack up your stuff in the morning, there won’t be endless fumbling around.

Special Considerations:

Despite its unbeatable features, it’s still true that cheaper prices mean sacrifices in quality. The hammock, carabiners, and tree straps won’t last as long as hammocks like ENO or Henessy.

That’s like comparing apples to oranges though, as you’re paying a lot more for those two brands.

But let’s get onto the good stuff. The first factor that made us hit the “add to cart” button is the array of colors. There are four different vibrant blends to choose from.

And how can we forget? Serac’s classic backpacking hammock is able to support 400 or more pounds. (Although the height is limited to six feet.) What a leg up over competition!

Bonus Features:

It’s pretty much unanimous that Serac has amazing customer service. They truly stand out from bigger companies and work with you per individual complaint or defective part.

And what we’ve all been waiting for… Serac offers a 5 year, unlimited warranty!

Best Uses:

At last, for those of you hammock backpacking newbies, this is the cooler for you. It isn’t the Yeti of hammock brands, but it doesn’t claim to be. It’d be pretty silly to buy a pricey ____ when you’re just starting out fishing, right?

Even though we’re recommending this for beginners, it’s suitable for intermediate more serious hikers and any backpackers really looking to lighten their load.

Best Backpacking Hammock Reviews: Tent Hammocks

Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter Pro Mosquito Hammock

TYPE: Backpacking Hammock Tent
PACKED SIZE: 4.3 x 8.6 x 10.7 inches
BOTTOM DIMENSIONS: 10’6″ x 5′
WEIGHT: 1.8 pounds
HAMMOCK FABRIC: nylon
HAMMOCK SET-UP: bug net, ropes, carabiners
CAN SUPPORT: 400 pounds

WALLET-O-METER: $$
RELAX-O-METER: 4.5

Overview

Love camping, but have terrible reactions to bug bites? This should help!

Although you can use a tarp to form a backpacking hammock tent, the Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter Pro has a bug net that you just can’t get that easily from a tarp. Not only will it shield you from those sneaky little monsters, but it’ll withstand the test of time. This backpacking hammock is durable and tough.

As advertised, the net does actually keep out “no-see-ums!”

Special Considerations

Unlike Hennessy Backpacking Hammocks, the Skeeter Beeter isn’t asymmetrical. Hand-in-hand with the symetrical nature means it’s harder to find a place to hang it.

A rain fly isn’t included in this backpacking hammock tent, although that seems counterintuitive in a hammock with ‘tent’ in the name! Below, we’ll help you find the best deals on rain flies and other accessories.

Best Uses

This is a great hammock for longer ventures because it’s so comfy. While you can stand a slightly flimsly Serac for a couple of nights, it can get old. Guarantee yourself restful nights with the Skeeter Beeter.

Of course, the more mosquitos and other unwanted insects are in the climate, the more valuable this backpacking hammock tent will be to you!

Best Backpacking Hammock Reviews: Two Person Hammocks

Two Tree Original Parachute Camping Hammock

HAMMOCK TYPE: Double Hammock
PACKED SIZE:
5.5 x 7.5 x 4.2 inches
WEIGHT: 1.7  pounds
HAMMOCK FABRIC: 210T Parachute Nylon
HAMMOCK SET-UP: carabiners, two hanging ropes, stuff sack with strap
CAN SUPPORT: 400 pounds
RELAX-O-METER: 5
PRICE-O-METER: $

Overview

This 2 person backpacking hammock will suit you and your honey (or whoever else you decide to shack up with) well, whether you’re camping or going on a long backpacking exploration.

Notably, this love seat turned hammock is durable. The aluminum carabiners are light, yet tough. Another reassuring feature of the Two Tree Double Parachute Hammock is its nautical-grade ropes.

No worries about plummeting down into a very unpleasant awakening in the middle of the night!

Special Considerations

Rather than convenient hammock straps, this two person backpacking hammock comes in a package with just plain ropes. While strong, they aren’t as easy to use. Another important consideration is that the hammock set’s missing a rain fly or tarp.

Since hammocks are frequently shipped without these important components, we’ll be dishing out the scoop on where to find accessories later on in this post.

Bonus Features

There are four color combinations to choose from, thus giving you more personalization in your soon-to-be backpacking bed.

Another bonus is the strap attached to the “stuff sack.” It seems like all hammock companies would do this, but nope. You’re getting lucky if you end up buying from Two Tree.

Best Uses

Short hammock backpacking trips are a perfect fit for the bare bones Two Tree Parachute Hammock. However, once you get a rain fly, you can venture further out.

Until you get a tarp for your backpacking hammock, make sure you’ll be in dry environments. Or make sure it’ll be dry where you’re going. (But really, get a tarp!)

Two person hammock backpacking is a way to bond with your partner in an entirely new way. Have fun!

Environmental Impact

Because of the company’s commitment to sustainability, Two Tree plants 2 trees for every hammock sold. Now that’s an amazing cause, since backpackpackers depend on trees for their hammocks!

Best Backpacking Hammock Reviews:
Backpack + Hammock = Love

The HackedPack

With backpacking, backpacking hammock, hammocking, etc. being thrown around all over the place in this blog post, it reads like a tongue twister. The terms are quite different yet sound so similar.

It’s easy to see how the phrase backpack hammock could get lost in the shuffle.

But no, it’s not a typo. There really is an all-in-one product that’s a backpack with a hammock built into it. Thus the name “HackedPack.”

First, the backpack part of the couple. Constructed from hearty nylon, the backpack is large enough to hold a laptop and has all the pockets you’d expect from a regular backpack.

The HackedPack’s awesomeness lies in its patented hammock storage system. The integrated hammock is parachute style and is triple stitched to hold as much as 500 pounds. Nine feet long straps stretch wide and far, so you can hang out (literally) practically anywhere.

Climb in and stay occupied for hours. After all, the backpack part of this marvelous contraption holds electronics, books, snacks, drinks, and whatever else you may need.

For overnight hammock backpacking trips, the HackedPack will easily hold your camping essentials.

Best Backpacking Hammock Reviews: DIY

You can also make your own backpacking hammock, right at home. It’s inexpensive and, like most homemade items, leaves less of a carbon footprint. While the web is teaming with DIY backpacking hammock ideas, check out the top two, right here.

#1. ENO Backpacking Hammock DIY Knockoff

Emily Grace King of Instructables has laid out a fantastic set of instructions with pictures. Notably, it’s an in-depth project and requires the ability to use a sewing machine.

Some of the required materials include household items like scissors, a book, lighter, and glue stick. Others, like nylon webbing and AmSteel Blue Rope will probably require some shopping.

Anyway, these instructions are remarkably detailed and illustrated and will literally walk you through the entire process of assembling the materials, stitching together the nylon, and attaching the storage pocket.

Even if you don’t intend to sew yourself to backpacking heaven, the pictures of the transformation are quite impressive.

#2. Just Jeff’s DIY Hammock

Next we have some open-ended, simple instructions. As the author puts it so well, “the coolest thing about making your own gear is that you can customize it however you want to.” For this reason, he says he’ll share what has worked for him – but it’s not meant to be followed to a T.

This is a nice, free spirited approach with some down to earth instructions.

Best Backpacking Hammock Reviews: Accessories

In a perfect world, all accessories would be included in one package. Although this isn’t the case, we have found the perfect accessories to fill in the gaps.

Ultimate Hammocks Hanging Kit

Inside this handy little kit, you’ll find two each of anchor bolt hangars, lag screws, and steel carabiners. The hanging kit is compatible with practically every hammock brand, including Hennessy and Grand Trunk.

Zupapa 10 Feet Hammock Straps

These two intensely long backpacking hammock straps are crafted from 100% non-stretch polyester. Each strap has 15 adjustable loops, making this a must have for every hammock backpacker!

The length and number of loops really opens up your options. With the two straps’ powers combined, they can support up to 2000 pounds!

Best Choice Portable Backpacking Hammock Stand

Best Choice’s sleek black stand is constructed with heavy duty steel to support non-spreader bar hammocks. It features an accessories tray, which has dual cup holders, a phone holder, and a slot for books/laptops.

Most likely, the idea of hauling around a 35+ pound backpacking hammock stand sounds imbecile for true backpacking excursions. But believe it or not, some people are into that. It’s good to have one for use at home or short trips to the beach, at any rate.

So…did anything in these best backpacking hammock reviews catch your eye?

Although this review hasn’t covered each and every backpacking hammock, these are the cream of the crop.

The routes you can take are varied; from investing a big chunk of cash in a high end hammock to making it from your own two hands, the good old fashioned way.

In any case, enjoy looking at how these fabulous backpacking hammocks match your lifestyle and preferences.

Happy Trails!
