Pelican Coolers vs Yeti Coolers:

After reading our detailed comparison of these two robust ice coolers, you’ll have the detailed information you need to make an informed decision.

So sit back, relax, and see how these rugged ice chests compare.

Pelican Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Ice Retention

In order to determine if one cooler holds ice longer than the other, we studied several different ice test challenges between Pelican Coolers and Yeti Coolers.

In both videos, you’ll see more than just an ice test comparison. You’ll also get to see how the cooler operates and the basic construction and features.

Video Demo #1: Pelican ProGear Elite 45 vs Yeti Tundra 45

5 Day Ice Challenge Results for the Yeti Tundra 45:

  • A small amount of ice left on day 5.
  • Conclusion: the Yeti Tundra 45 probably holds ice for 5-7 days (with moderate use)

5 Day Ice Chest Challenge Results for the Pelican ProGear Elite 45

  • Much more ice remaining on day 5
  • Conclusion: the Pelican ProGear Elite 45 probably can hold ice for 7-8 days (with moderate use)

As you can see, the Pelican ProGear Elite Cooler held ice longer in this specific comparison.

Video Demo #2: Pelican 35 Quart vs Yeti Tundra 35 Eight Day Ice Challenge

Yeti Cooler Results: After 8 days, this mighty ice chest still held ice.
Pelican Cooler Results: After 8 days, the Pelican had no ice remaining.

  • While the Yeti Tundra 35 won this challenge, it’s important to realize that the numbers attached to Yeti Tundra names don’t refer to capacity. Instead, they refer to the “Series Number.”
  • Undoubtedly, this gave the smaller Yeti Tundra 35 an advantage over the Pelican 35 Quart.
  • Another interesting fact is that this test was performed in the middle of summer with an average temperature of 88 degrees.

Pelican Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Construction

Similarities in Construction

These similarities in construction are most important because they show how both coolers are built exceptionally well.

Pelican Coolers Unique Features:

Pelican Coolers vs Yeti Coolers
Here’s a perfect example of how colorful Pelican Coolers can be.
  • Lock hasp with built-in bottle openers
  • Stainless steel hardware
  • Molded-in drink holders
  • Attached drain plug leash
  • Extra wide TPE handles
  • ABS latches that unlatch with the push of a button
  • Integrated fish ruler on lid
  • Dual handle systems
Pelican Coolers vs Yeti Coolers
Yeti’s signature T Rex latches are cheap and easy to replace.

Yeti Coolers Unique Features:

  • Military grade rope handles*
  • Removable dry goods basket included in price of cooler
  • Detachable drain plug
  • Recessed Handles
  • “T-Rex” Rubber Latches

*The Yeti Roadie does not have a dry goods basket or rope handles.

Pelican Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Durability

Although some features vary, both coolers are practically indestructible. Not even an angry bear throwing one of them at a tree would phase these tough-as-nails coolers.

As you can see, their roto-molded, tough plastic bodies aren’t phased by anything… even a slingshot.

As discussed above, both coolers are rotationally molded and crafted from the toughest plastic available. To say they’re “tough cookies” would be a huge understatement!

Pelican Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Ease of Use

Always remember to consider ease of use, or “usability!”  Although every cooler has unique quirks, some are more cumbersome than others.

Pelican vs Yeti
The Pelican 5 lb Ice Pack chills contents faster & stays cold longer.

Pelican vs Yeti: Lids

  • Occasionally, Yeti Coolers’ lids close randomly. This is disconcerting for parents of young children, that’s for sure!
  • But the Pelican Coolers’ lids work just fine.

Pelican vs Yeti: Draining

The pros and cons of draining a Yeti Cooler:

  • Yeti Coolers’ handles dangle at the exact level of the drain plug, which is a hassle for some people.
  • Another downside is that it’s easier to lose its detachable plug.
  • On the upside, the Yeti drain plugs’ versatility is very convenient. The hole in the plug allows you to control the speed of draining.

The pros and cons of draining a Pelican Cooler:

  • Pelican Coolers’ drain plug leashes are also double-edged swords.
  • One one hand, the drain plug leash tends to wear down over time. (Although it’s cheap to replace.)
  • On the other hand though, they’re garden hose-friendly.

Pelican vs Yeti: Packing

Well, both coolers are a bit difficult to squeeze in the back of your trunk or in other tight places. Their external hardware sticks out.

If you’re looking for an easy-to-pack ice chest, Canyon Outfitter Coolers have recessed hardware, making them much easier to pack.

Pelican Coolers vs Yeti Coolers

Pelican vs Yeti: Wheels

Sometimes, it’s just easier to roll a cooler. Especially when it’s a hefty, chunky ice box like a Yeti or Pelican. Unfortunately, Yeti does not offer a model with wheels. (Although you can make Yeti wheels happen, if you’re a little creative.)

Pelican Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Price

Pelican Coolers are less expensive than their Yeti counterparts. Of course it’s natural to gravitate toward less expensive equipment. And then you discover if less expensive means “low quality” or just a “good deal.” In this case, you’ve found a damn good deal.

Pelican Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Warranty

Pelican vs Yeti Cooler Comparison

Pelican Coolers Warranty: Limited Lifetime

Obviously, Pelican Coolers blow Yeti Coolers out of the water in this section of Pelican Coolers vs Yeti Coolers.

For the first three months, everything on a Pelican everything is covered. After that, you have a lifetime protection of only the roto-molded body of the cooler.

Yeti Cooler Warranty

Yeti Coolers Warranty: 5 Years

Unsurprisingly, Yeti offers a five-year warranty. Why? Because those lucky bastards have quite a loyal following. They do what they want.

Luckily, there are plenty of discounted replacement parts for Yeti Tundra Coolers on Amazon.

Pelican Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Colors

Yeti Cooler Colors: White, Desert Tan, or Ice Blue

In addition to these classic colors, Yeti offers an astounding collegiate series, logs, and more.

Pelican Cooler Colors: There are 21 colors to choose from. Talk about variety!

(Golden Yellow, Navy Blue, Red, Aqua Green, Burnt Orange, Burgundy, Deep Blue, Deep Purple, Forest `Green, Midnight Blue, Teal Green, Light Blue, Maroon, Light Orange, Light Purple, Dark Blue, and Gray.)

Pelican Coolers vs Yeti Coolers:
Which is better?

It’s a tough call to make, since these coolers are neck-in-neck. In truth, no matter what we conclude, the “best” one for you could be either one. Ultimately, it boils down to your own preferences.

Pelican Coolers vs Yeti Coolers
The Yeti Rambler Colster is the perfect finishing touch for your brand new Yeti Tundra.

Pelican Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Pelican Coolers Pros

  • Pelican ProGear Elite Coolers’ long ice retention makes them the best choice for outdoors people who spend a week or more in the backcountry.
  • And Pelican Coolers are practically begging to go on a fishing trip. The fish ruler and drink holders are perfect for a relaxing day on the water.
  • And don’t forget the huge variety of available colors. After laying eyes on a purple Pelican, a tan Yeti just isn’t going to impress you. (If you’re into that kind of thing.)

Pelican Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Yeti Cooler Advantages

  • To be fair, Yetis are much better looking. Their sleek design and finish plays just as much a role as Pelican Coolers Color does.
  • Also, Yeti Coolers are just as  strong and well-constructed as Pelicans, so you’re definitely not wasting your money.
  • For those of you who love the status symbol of Yeti Coolers, rock on. So if a high price tag doesn’t phase you, go for it. Just remember how short Yeti Coolers’ Ice Retention can be.

Pelican Coolers vs Yeti Coolers:
And the winner is…

Overall, Pelican ProGear Elite Coolers are the best coolers for the money. They have multiple built-in features, and their ice retention is best. Plus, Pelican Coolers cost and warranty is extremely better than Yeti’s. However, this was a close call. If you go with a Yeti, we salute that decision. That’s also a fantastic choice.

Cheers!

3 Differences in Construction to Be Aware Of

As you can see, both of these mighty beasts are constructed in similar ways, with just a few slight differences. The differences include:

  • Orca Coolers have thicker insulation, which translates to better ice retention.
  • They also have more dry storage space with their cargo net pockets.
  • Yeti’s drain plugs have a hole in them, while the Orca’s do not.

2 Very Small Differences in Construction

    • Yeti’s “T-Rex” latches are almost exactly the same as the Orca’s “Whale Tail” latches. They’re both high quality and function the same way.
    • Lastly, their handles are made from different materials. However, they’re both tough cords with rubber grips. They work the same way to help two people distribute the weight evenly as they carry the ice chest.

Durability

As the video demonstrates, the Yeti Tundra will handle anything life throws at it! Now, to see how it compares to the Orca 40 Quart.

The 4 Ultra-Strong Characteristics of the 40 Quart Orca vs Yeti Tundra 50

  1. The plastic that makes up their body and lid, which is called “polyethylene,” is their secret weapon.
  2. Also, the riveted pin system keeps their hinges right where they belong.
  3. Finally, rotomolded pieces of equipment are among the strongest in the world. For detailed information about the various types of plastic, go here
  4. Another similarity is that they’re both Certified Grizzly Bear proof.

Just take a look at the videos of Grizzly Bears attempting to open both Orca and Yeti Coolers. Spoiler alert: the bears fail miserably.

The 40 Quart Orca vs Yeti Tundra 50
Why They Both Have the Same Level of Usability

There are several similarities in how these coolers are user-friendly…and how they aren’t. First, here are the similarities:

Orca 40 Quart vs Yeti Tundra 50
Here’s a good look at the Orca 40 Quart’s handles.
  • Both coolers’ lids *may* snap shut unexpectedly, according to some owner reviews.
  • Another shared feature is their nylon rope handles; these make two-person carrying easier.
  • They both tend to be quite heavy compared to other high end ice chests.

Now for the differences:

  • Although both coolers have screw-on, detachable drain plugs, we prefer the Yeti’s plug.
  • A Yeti drain plug has a hole on the screw-on part, so you can partially unscrew it to slow down the water flow.
  • It’s easier to store small items you want to keep dry in the Orca, since it has a side mesh pocket.
  • Lastly, Orca Cooler’s feet can be slippery on wet surfaces, like on a boat.

The pros and cons of each brand of ice chest weigh each other out. Therefore, it makes the most sense to call it a tie.

Ice Retention
40 Quart Orca Cooler vs Yeti Tundra 50

On average, the Orca 40 Quart will hold ice for at least two days longer than a Yeti Tundra 50. No matter which cooler you choose to buy, it ultimately depends on many factors. (Such as pre-cooling, ice packs vs ice, ambient temperature, etc.)

Although the “20 Quart Orca vs Yeti Roadie Cooler Comparison Video” below is between different cooler sizes, it does a great job of showing how well Orca Coolers hold ice.

*A key point in this ice test challenge is that the Yeti Roadie had an advantage of being pre-cooled longer. But it still lost the ice chest challenge.

Canyon Coolers vs Yeti Coolers
Which one’s easier to use?

Now, the Canyon Coolers are coming at this “Ease of Use” part of the Canyon Coolers vs Yeti Coolers duel with all they’ve got. Of course the Yetis are too, but it isn’t that to be expected?

Let’s see exactly how this plays out:

Canyon Coolers vs Yeti Coolers
The Canyon’s recessed latches. (Click for more Pictures)

#1. First, Canyon Coolers are much easier to carry and store because no parts stick out from the cooler’s body.

Unlike Canyon Coolers, Yeti’s have external hardware all over the place, which makes it tougher to slide them into tight places.

#2. Of course, handles make a big difference. But it’s split about 50/50 between Canyon Coolers vs Yeti. While Yeti’s molded-in grooved handles are great for some, some testers think the grooves just make it more uncomfortable. Also, some people don’t like how shallow the molded-in handles on Canyon Coolers are.

Canyon Coolers vs Yeti Coolers
The Canyon Cooler 22 features a comfy shoulder strap. (Click for Pictures)

#3. Some people find the latches in Canyon Coolers are supremely stress-free to use as compared to Yeti Coolers’ latches.

But if you can get used to the pull-up cam system, it really does seem easier.

Why Canyon Coolers Are Easier to Use..Barely

Although this wasn’t an easy call to make, Canyon Coolers just barely squeaked past Yeti Coolers. How? It’s their recessed hardware and cam latch system that scored them the win.

Canyon Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Price

Yeti Coolers are much more expensive. Often, they cost $100+ more. In fact, you might end up paying as low as half the price for a Canyon of the same size.

Canyon Coolers vs Yeti Coolers Warranties: Five Year vs Lifetime

Cooler Comparison
Yeti Ice is easy to use and comes in plenty of sizes. (Click for Pictures/Discounts)

Yeti offers a 5-year warranty.

On the other hand, Canyon gives a Lifetime Warranty on most coolers.

In one forum, a customer writes about his positive experience with Canyon regarding his cooler’s damaged lid. He used it “for some time.” Canyon sent a brand new cooler right to this man’s doorstep after they heard of this wear and tear. They didn’t even ask him to send them his worn down cooler.

Canyon Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Ice Retention

Undoubtedly, ice retention is one of the most important points to look at. On average, the two perform about the same.

Similarities

  • Both Yeti and Canyon use pressure-injected high-density polyurethane foam to insulate their walls and lids.
  • Also, their lids are 3 inches thick for better ice retention.

How do they stack up in ice chest challenges?

  2. Second, the Canyon Cooler 35 Quart vs Yeti Tundra 45. In this 5 day cooler comparison video, the Canyon had much more ice left on the fifth day.

Yeti’s Colors & Veneer:

  • Desert Tan

Yeti makes up for the sparse color selection by providing an incredible finish. It has ultra-smooth, classy veneer.

Additionally, Yeti offers an unbeatable array of 64 Collegiate Coolers and Tumblers.

Canyon Coolers’ Colors & Veneer:

  • Sandstone
  • White Marble
  • Teal
  • Lime Green

The finish on Canyon Coolers is somewhat rough. Also, the corners are beveled. These two points make Canyon Outfitter Coolers look blocky.

Canyon Coolers vs Yeti Coolers
The Canyon 55 Quart is one beast of an ice chest.

And the best color section goes to…Yeti

Compared to Yeti Coolers, Canyons are fine. They offer one more “classic” color, which is nice. But Yeti comes out on top with it’s offering of 64 Collegiate Coolers and Tumblers.

Honestly, a cooler’s finish brings life to the colors or dulls them. Also, we love Yeti’s classy look. Ultimately, it does come down to personal preference.

If you’re looking to save money, go with  Canyon. In fact, go with the Canyon either way… lifetime warranty, anyone? Unless, of course, Yetis just have the main qualities you’re looking for. Knock yourself out!

Orca Coolers vs Yeti Coolers Capacity: How Yeti Blows Orca Out of the Water

Yeti Coolers come out on top in this category of the Orca Coolers vs Yeti Coolers rivalry.

Yeti coolers range from the Yeti Roadie to the Yeti Tundra 350.  In contrast, Orca Coolers range from the Orca 20 quart to the Orca 140 quart. As you can see, Yeti offers a much wider range of capacities.

Notably, Yeti Coolers’ numbers don’t represent capacity. For example, a Yeti Tundra 105 is only capable of holding about 87.2 quarts.

Orca Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Ice Retention

Ice retention is the name of the game. After all, you aren’t shelling out your hard-earned money to tote around boxes of miscellaneous objects. This is your sustenance we’re talking about. These are your weekends we’re talking about.

Orca Coolers vs Yeti Coolers Review
Click for more pictures of this Orca beauty.

Yeti coolers almost always have worse ice retention than other top tier ice chests. Sure enough, Orca Coolers retain ice for an average of two days longer than Yeti Coolers – or more.

This may be due to Orca Coolers’ extra inch of insulation in their lid. Yeti offers a two-inch lid, while Orca is constructed with a three-inch lid.

According to many, Orca’s last an average of 3-5 days longer.

Orca Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Construction

Both of these rugged molded coolers have fantastic construction. But how do they compare? First, we’ll look at Yeti’s construction.

Orca Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: 3 Differences in Construction to Be Aware Of

As you can see, both of these mighty beasts are constructed in similar ways, with just a few slight differences. The differences include:

Yeti Size Comparisons
Yeti Roadie (Discounts/Pictures)
  • Orca Ice Chests have thicker insulation, which may lead to better ice retention.
  • They also have more dry storage space with their cargo net pockets.
  • Yeti’s drain plugs have a hole in them.

Orca Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Is One More Durable than the Other?

Unsurprisingly, both of these beastly ice chests are durable and able to take a beating or ten.

The plastic that makes up their body and lid is the strongest kind. In fact, it’s so strong kayaks are crafted from the same material. The riveted pin system keeps their hinges right where they belong.

They’re both Certified Grizzly Bear proof. Just take a look at the video of a Grizzly Bear attempting to open an Orca 140 quart. Yeti Coolers hold up just as well under Grizzly Bear attempts.

Orca Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Why They Both Have the Same Level of Usability

There are several similarities in how these coolers are user-friendly…and how they aren’t. First, here are the similarities:

Orca Coolers vs Yeti
The mesh pocket on the Orca Coolers is ultra convenient!
  • Both coolers’ lids *may* snap shut unexpectedly, according to some reviews.

(Pictured above)

Orca Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Accessories

Yeti Cooler Accessories

Yeti’s accessory collection is as wide and varied as Orca Cooler accessories. Handy cutting-board dividers, fishing rod holders, and beverage holders come with many of their coolers.

And that’s just mentioning a few of the basics. There are plenty of others – just a couple of examples are the wall mounted bottle opener and drain plug hose connection

Orca Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Customization

Yeti Coolers & Cups Customization

Yeti’s Collegiate Series offers customization for ice chests as well as their Rambler Drinkware Series. And it’s freaking awesome. To quote Yeti,

“YETI custom logos are durable, permanent graphics that do not peel or fade once bonded to the cooler. YETI’s proven logo application process ensures the logo will last the life of the cooler.”

Yeti’s Collegiate Series Probably Has Your College’s Logo

Yeti’s Collegiate Series gives so many people the opportunity to represent their alma mater in style. Check to see if your university’s logo is available; there are 38 college logos to choose from. Of course many of the logos are colorful, sprucing up otherwise boring (in our opinion) colors.

Visit Yeti’s Custom Cooler Shop to have your logo added to your Yeti Rambler. Show off your business’ logo or any type of sweet design you came up with.

Yeti also offers a giant selection of pre-made logos. For example, in one subcategory alone, fishing, there are 17 logos available.

Why Orca’s Customization is Also Pretty Damn Cool

Orca also has a collegiate series of coolers and drinkware. Although it isn’t quite as big as Yeti’s collection, their colorful coolers and tumblers are the most cheerful accessories one could ask for.

Orca Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Are Orca Coolers as Expensive as Yeti Coolers?

Prices are also quite similar between the two brands, with Orca Coolers being an average of about ten to twenty bucks cheaper than Yeti Ice Chests. In our books, that isn’t enough to say Orca has any sort of advantage over the Yeti.

Orca Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Warranty

The warranties couldn’t be more different than the sizes and prices are similar. The Yeti Coolers’ five-year warranty gives us some degree of confidence in the Yeti brand’s workmanship. But five years seem pretty measly next to Orca Coolers’ lifetime warranty.

Orca Coolers vs Yeti Coolers: Where They’re Really Made May Surprise You

Where are Yeti Coolers made?

Additionally, their Yeti Hoppers and Ramblers are manufactured in China. Yeti doesn’t say how much they manufacture in the US, but we’re willing to place a huge bet that it isn’t here in America.

You can give Yeti a call and request a 100% American-made product. (Contact Yeti Customer Service at 512.394.9384 to request a Yeti made only on USA soil.)

Are Orca Coolers really 100% American Made?

20 Quart Orca vs Yeti Roadie

Yes!

Another question we often hear is asking which ice chests are American-made. Unfortunately, there aren’t many coolers that are both manufactured and assembled in the US. *But* Orca brand ice chests are one of the few verified American ice chests.

And the Verdict Is…

If we had to choose the best cooler, it would be the Orca brand cooler. The reasons for this are simple:

Orca vs Yeti
Click for Discounts/Pictures
  • Orca Coolers have much better ice retention.
  • Plus they come with a lifetime warranty.
  • The Orca Gear Molle Wrap…need we say more?
  • Orcas are 100% American-made.
  • Orcas have a bigger variety of colors and patterns.

All this being said, Orca Coolers are only available in sizes up to 140 quarts. Yeti extends all the way to 350. In that area, Yeti Coolers are winning by a landslide.

Both ice chests are pretty damn dependable. They’re built well, are similar in most categories, and even look alike. Of course, different people will be happier with different brands. It all depends on your preferences for factors like ice retention, customization, etc.

Orca Coolers have thicker insulation, which translates to better ice retention.
The Orca 20 Quart also has more dry storage space with the outer cargo net pockets.
Finally, the Yeti Roadie’s drain plug has a whole in the middle. The reason for this is to change the speed of drainage.

The following video does a great job of showing the Orca 20 Quart’s construction:

Differences in Ease of Use: 20 Quart Orca vs Yeti Roadie

A Yeti drain plug has a hole on the screw-on part, so you can partially unscrew it to slow down the water flow.
On the other hand, it’s easier to store small items you want to keep dry in the Orca 20 Quart. The mesh pocket really comes in handy.
